Pope Benedict XVI signed a joint declaration with Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I, easing inter-church tensions and requesting more collaboration between Catholic and Orthodox churches.
After they attended the mass for the Feast of St. Andrew at St. George.Church on Thursday, the pontiff and the patriarch blessed the people from a balcony overlooking the inner courtyard of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate located in the Phanar quarter of Istanbul. They later embraced each other, performing a ceremony called 'the hug of love and brotherhood.’
Afterwards, the two religious leaders delivered messages labeling the division of Christianity as “scandalous.”
Benedict XVI and Bartholomew, following the mass, went to the patriarchal office where they had 45-minute meeting between the committees. They signed a joint declaration at the end of the meeting.
Although there was an Arabic, English, French, German, Greek, Russian and Spanish version of the declaration, a Turkish version was not included despite the fact that the historic event was held in Turkey's biggest city.
