Pope Benedict XVI, continuing his historic visit to Turkey at the official invitation of Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, met Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I and attended a mass in an Orthodox church Thursday morning.
The pope arrived in Istanbul on Wednesday evening on the same Turkish Airlines plane that took him to Izmir after he attended a mass at the House of Virgin Mary near Ephesus in western Turkey.
Benedict XVI presided over a mass at the House of Virgin Mary on Tuesday, which is one of the most revered places in the world for Christians.
The Istanbul Governor, Patriarch Bartholomew I and Armenian Patriarch Mesrob II welcomed the pope at Ataturk Airport.
Later in the evening, the pontiff attended a mass at Aya Yorgi Orthodox Church together with Patriarch Bartholomew and other Orthodox religious figures.
Security measures were running at the highest level in Istanbul, Turkey's most populous city, following the pope’s arrival in the city. Dozens of main roads on pope's itinerary were closed to traffic. Thousands of commuters were stuck in traffic jams due to the diverted roads in Istanbul’s already notorious traffic.

Just one correction to your story: The chief Orthodox Eucharistic rite is called the Divine Liturgy, not Mass.
